Originally
known as Mooresville and later changed
to Duplin Depot, the community was settled about 1825.
In 1838 Thaddeus D. Love, of Wilmington, conductor on
the first train that ran through the then crossroads community,
moved here. Being familiar with Jane Porter's popular
novel "Thaddeus of Warsaw," Mr. Loves friends
began calling him Thaddeus of Warsaw. The name had such
appeal to the few residents that in 1855 the community
was incorporated and the name was changed to Warsaw. At
that time there were about twenty residences, three general
merchandise stores ad a combination store-post office
in town. |
The
town was also a religious center.
The Baptist Church built a college in Warsaw in 1856 which
had many boarders from surrounding counties. The Baptist
Church was erected in 1856 and for many years was the
only church in town. The Presbyterian Church was built
in 1884 and later the Methodist Church was erected. |
